Hervás, Bébian and Stokoe: the first linguists of the languages of signs //Hervás, Bébian y Stokoe: los primeros lingüistas de las lenguas de señas

HERVAS BÉBIAN STOKOE But before Stokoe they are Hervás and Bébian. Stokoe knew the Mimographie. But it never said: „I learned this or that one of Bébian “. The writing of Bébian and the one of Stokoe are very similar. Chance? Lamentably, nobody knows. All say today: Stokoe invented the linguistic one of the language of signs. That is an average truth. Today nobody remembers Hervás. Nobody remembers Bébian. That is negative. Hervás and Bébian are very important also in the history of the deaf people. If you want to see an example of the Mimographie, you click here (Presentation in PowerPoint 470 KB). http://www.cultura-sorda.eu/resources/Oviedo_Mimographie_2008.ppt In order to see an example of the writing of Stokoe, you click here (Presentation in PowerPoint, 1,6 MB). http://www.cultura-sorda.eu/resources/Oviedo_transcripcion_Stokoe_2008.ppt ================================== ================================== Pero antes de Stokoe están Hervás y Bébian. Stokoe conocía la Mimographie. Pero no dijo nunca: „yo aprendí esto o aquello de Bébian“. La escritura de Bébian y la de Stokoe son muy parecidas. ¿Casualidad? Lamentablemente, nadie sabe. Todos dicen hoy: Stokoe inventó la lingüística de la lengua de señas. Eso es una media verdad. Hoy nadie recuerda a Hervás. Nadie recuerda a Bébian. Eso es negativo. Hervás y Bébian son muy importantes también en la historia de los sordos. What a joy to learn about Hervás! I learned about Roch-Ambroise Bébian in 1984 from Harlan Lane's "When the Mind Hears" and have ever since then considered Bébian as the father of the LSF linguistics in France and painted a portrait of him. If you would like to see a photo of the portrait, send me your email address, and I shall send you the copy. English professor William C. Stokoe is the father of ASL linguistics. Dr. Stokoe began the research in circa 1955 -- some 30 years before Dr. Lane's book was published.

Could you also send me a photo of Hervás? I may consider painting a portrait of him.

Once again, thank you for sharing the information.
